I am so happy for you both! I'd love to hear more about your experiences there and what it took to get visas to live there. I've often wondered about living the expat life. Thank you, for checking in!
Congratulations on your move! I agree with you, a move abroad is not a magic solution, I am still unlearning implicit beliefs and unhealthy habits from my upbringing. I moved to Corfu, Greece in 2021, for many of the same reasons you mention about your move. Lifestyle and cost of living being important drivers in making this decision.
How wonderful to move to a slower paced society. I moved from one (Norway) to the USA as a 90 day fiancee, and married my American beau - but I wish we could leave for Canada for many reasons, mostly to be less troubled by the political stuff going on here. Due to health reasons, we can't decamp but at least we live in gorgeous Oregon. Who knows, the western seaboard states might become Canadian provinces. Just kidding 😂 Maybe. In the meantime we'll have to ride things out. And I look forward to reading more about your adventures in Costa Rica. I loved the videos and pictures you shared. Looks like a beautiful location. Muy bonita. 💞
You're story mirrors mine in many ways. We built a home in Belize in 2020 and currently spend about half the year here. My wife and I both lived here before as Peace Corps Volunteers in the 1970s..
Jim-wonderful article and pictures and videos. Good for you! My husband and I taught English to PhD students at Peking University for 10 months. We did most of what you recommended. We were there from 2005-2006 before the current regime and when they were building the ‘birds nest’ for their Olympics. My husband is Mr Funny Man and communicated with the Chinese with humor. We knew how to count to 20 in Chinese and some words to use when buying food. In our classrooms the students had to speak English. For other situations we had a student liaison to interpret for us. It was the most amazing experience of our lives.
I loved this and so grateful you shared your experience with us. Relocating to another countrt has been the best thing we did despite the challenges. The self-awareness built is unbelievable and I would've never challenged my belief system so hard.
I'm all for belief-system deconstruction and cultivating existential health, slowing down and the great cofee you mentioned.
Half way through I was hoping the fur babies will make an appearance, thanks for that. And the heavy cream search brought memories about our early days in the UK trying to find sour cream.
We all live a little through the stories you share and I'm looking forward to the next one!
Thank you Jim and Amy for sharing this. I miss your sweet doggies and hope you are getting the wonderful experiences you deserve.. We miss you still.. Six months having you here wasnt nearly long enough for us.. Love you both Tess and Richard
That was fun to read! I hope you write more about what your life is like in Costa Rica and what you're having to learn and unlearn. This is a silly question to ask, of course, but when you lived in Nampa OR, did you know and run into Tom Oord?
We moved to Kenya at the end of 2022 and have immensely enjoyed an increase in quality of life, decrease in expenses, stress and risk, and as a result have traveled all over the world these past 2.5 years! Cheers!

Thank you for sharing all this. You were smart to make this big change while you can.
My husband and I are in our 70's and he now has multiple health issues that make traveling any farther than a couple hour car ride impossible.
Looks wonderful down there!

Many well-wishes, my friend! Thank you for including us in your adventure.

I love this post. Thank you for the shout-out.

Tom and I are friends. Great guy! He lived down the street in Nampa. Last year I spoke at ORTCON.
Any chance you're going to ORTCON this year? (A lot more trouble from Costa Rica!) I am going this year.

Thanks for sharing your journey. Looking forward to reading more. 🥰🥰🥰
Sounds like a wonderful grand adventure! It's always interesting how a new place can take us to a new place! 🤔
Cute dogs. Surprised you have not found heavy cream in Costa Rica, but it is good you have enjoyed their coffee.
They do have heavy cream here... it's just not as easily accessible. You just have to kinda know where to get it :)
Love this so much
